Mergen Ring
In 2025, the Yelai brand collaborated with the artist Aya Shalkar as a part of her project “Mergen”, which was unveiled at Sapar Contemporary in New York.
Within this collaboration, Assemgul made the “Mergen” ring — a silver archer’s ring inspired by the heritage nomadic culture, worn on a thumb. Furthermore, Assemgul performed as the creative director of the project.
The “Mergen” ring is inspired by historical relics, with each line and delicate detail crafted to rest comfortably on the thumb and support it during archery practice.
The moon on the surface of the ring symbolizes spiritual maturity and protection, while the star represents a radiant path, guiding one forward. The tulip speaks of renewal and the endless cycles of rebirth, while the ornaments adorning the ring embody prosperity and abundance, as understood within the Turkic tradition.
On the inside of the ring, the word “Mergen” is engraved in ancient runic script, symbolizing the great legacy of the ancestors.
Historical significance
Worn across Central and South Asia, this ring served a practical purpose: to protect the thumb from the bowstring’s tension and ensure a flawless release.
Yet, it was more than just a functional piece—it was a symbol of elite status, mastery, and honor, crafted from precious materials to reflect the wearer’s noble rank and skillful prowess.
Mythology
In the mythology of “Mergen”, the figure of the archer holds deep symbolic significance.
“To the one who gazes upon the horizon, the rider and horse appeared as one — an inseparable being, bound together from the very moment of birth. Their unity, grace, and unparalleled mastery were so striking that the legend of the centaur — a creature both human and horse — was born from this vision.”
Legends, however, are not just tales. Our ancestors, with their unmatched skill, were undeniably among the greatest archers ever to live, and their feats have since been immortalized in history.
Yelai’s intention
The “Mergen” ring symbolizes unyielding strength, essential for finding a unique life path and achieving desired goals.
A person’s fate is shaped by the choices they make along their journey. To reach a particular goal, one must possess the decisiveness, confidence, and accuracy of a true archer.
Therefore, the “Mergen” ring transcends mere adornment—it is a companion for those who remain true to their purpose and aim directly at the target.
